At 2nd Vietnam International Conference of Aesthetic Medicine (VICAM) on August 01-03, 2024, Dr. Phan Thi Hong Vinh, Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, provided a scientific presentation on “Research on scar management from early stage after aesthetic surgeries using Hypericum and Neem oil dressing (WOUND/KERECIS SWITZERLAND AG)”. The topic got the attention of many delegates, experts and plastic surgeons attending the conference.

According to Dr. Phan Thi Hong Vinh, there are four stages of the wound healing process: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and maturation. Delayed epithelialization (after 10 to 14 days) will dramatically increase the incidence of abnormal scarring. Thus, scar management should be started from the inflammation stage when the wound is still non-epithelialized.

The study results have demonstrated the effectiveness of Hypericum oil and Neem oil (WOUND) in scar management from an early stage after plastic surgeries. WOUND is considered as an “all- in- one” wound care solution applied from the inflammatory stage, creates an ideal moist wound environment for an optimal wound healing and helps shorten the wound healing time. Therefore, WOUND prevents scar formation from the early stage on non-epithelialized wounds.

The high content of 5 types of fatty acids in WOUND provide a strong antibacterial effect. With a spray application, without direct contact with the wound (non-touch), WOUND helps to further reduce the risk of infection.

As reported by Dr. Phan Thi Hong Vinh, in the scope of this study, WOUND was applied to facial aesthetic cases (rhinoplasty: 15; blepharoplasty:10), breast augmentation (2), and abdominoplasty (3) to evaluate the healing effect and cosmetic result of the wounds after surgeries: 30 patients in the experimental group and 30 patients in the control group (not using WOUND).

The research findings showed that, in the experimental group, the healing speed was faster, the wounds were cleaner without maceration, the symptoms of redness, swelling, and pain were also reduced compared to the control group. Due to the wound healing time reduced significantly, the cosmetic outcome is also more satisfactory. The scars appear better, flatter and lighter.

At the conference, Dr. Phan Thi Hong Vinh also has mentioned a comprehensive, optimal and continuous scar management solution after aesthetic surgeries with WOUND and BAPSCARCARE. When the wound has completely epithelialized, scar management should be continued with medical silicone therapy (as BAPSCARCARE). Medical silicone normalizes the collagen synthesis to prevent the formation of abnormal scars.

The report by Dr. Phan Thi Hong Vinh provided useful information to delegates and experts at VICAM 2024 on solutions of scar management right after aesthetic surgeries.
