On October 5, 2024, the Scientific Conference and Continuing Medical Education event, themed “UPDATING PROGRESSES IN WOUND CARE: THE ROLE OF NEEM OIL, HYPERICUM OIL, AND MEDICAL-GRADE HONEY,” was successfully held, with the participation of over 200 doctors and wound care experts.

Prof. Dr. Jos M.G.A. Schols, Professor of Community Geriatrics at Maastricht University, Netherlands, began the conference with an impressive presentation on the topic “Care of Chronic Wounds; Overall Strategies in EU Countries, Explained by the Example of Pressure Ulcer/Injury Treatment Strategies”. The presentation garnered significant interest from delegates, experts, and doctors in the field. Prof. Dr. Schols outlined the fundamental principles and key factors in managing chronic wounds, especially pressure ulcers in the elderly.

According to Prof. Dr. Jos M.G.A. Schols, the treatment of chronic wounds requires a comprehensive approach grounded in fundamental principles, with wound bed preparation being the most critical component. The overarching goal is to establish a wound bed that is well-vascularized, free of necrotic tissue, without excessive exudate, and with a low bacterial load—optimizing conditions for the growth of healthy granulation tissue and epithelialization to facilitate wound closure.

Prof. Dr. Schols emphasized the importance of infection control and moisture balance at the wound site, highlighting these as essential factors in creating an environment conducive to accelerated wound healing.
A key highlight of the presentation was the update on advanced technologies and treatment methods, particularly the WOUND product—a film-forming technology aligned with the latest guidelines. WOUND supports the creation of a moist wound environment, stimulates granulation tissue formation, and promotes rapid wound closure. Additionally, WOUND incorporates five types of fatty acids with potent antibacterial properties. These fatty acids disrupt bacterial cell walls, leading to bacterial inactivation and lysis, thereby effectively preventing infections.

Prof. Dr. Jos M.G.A. Schols delivered a presentation that was not only academically enriching but also highly practical, equipping physicians with in-depth knowledge and the latest advancements in chronic wound management. The integration of evidence-based medicine with modern technologies, such as WOUND, promises to pave the way for innovative approaches in wound care and treatment, particularly for the vulnerable elderly population who are fragile and delayed healing.
